A natal chart or birth chart is made up of a Sun sign, Moon sign, and the eight planets.
Ancient astrologers believe that each moving planet was known to have a neat and straightforward relationship with a fixed zodiacal sign where the Sun and Moon ruled one sign each and the five known planets two signs each.
In ancient times, it was believed that the planets stand for the will of the gods and their direct influence upon human affairs. However, modern astrologers believe that the planets characterize the basic drives or impulses in the human mind which are denoted by different characters through the twelve signs of the zodiac, and in the different spheres of life through the twelve houses.
The Sun sign and Moon sign, often mistakenly referred to as planets, are in fact more accurately known as luminaries. They are the most important planets in an astrology chart. Compatibility between two people is shown by their polarities.
During ancient times, in accordance with the doctrine of astrology of sect, the Sun and Moon were regarded as the rulers of two groups of the other planets. The daytime or diurnal planets are ruled by the Sun while the nighttime or nocturnal planets are ruled by the Moon.
The Sun was also referred to as the sect ruler or luminary of sect (the luminary “in charge” of any given chart) for all charts of events and persons born in the daytime, while the Sun was over the horizon. However, the Moon was referred to as the sect ruler or luminary of sect for night charts, while the Sun was below the horizon.
However, in modern Western astrology, the Moon and the Sun are being given more importance and it outweighs all the other celestial factors in the interpretation of birth charts data.
Every planet and luminary, together with the Ascendant, governs a specific facet of one’s personality.
The sun signs or the constellations of the zodiac create a background to the action of the planets.
The planets position within the constellations, as seen from the Earth, rules astrological interpretation. For this reason, we include the Sun and Moon in the term ‘Planets’, giving ten planets excluding the Earth in astrological calculation.
Given the distinction as ”verbs” in our world, the planets and luminaries, the Sun and the Moon, entail action, lack of action or a state of being. The character of the action, inaction or state of being, and the “houses” signify the aspect of life or the place of the action, inaction or state of being is practiced or alleged is described by the constellations or “signs”.
The Sun or “The Star” or the Illuminator is the source of life. It determines how others see you. It stands for your general personality and individuality.
The Moon sign represents the part of you that you see. It shows a person’s emotional responses and instinctive reactions.
The planets are linked, especially in the Chinese astrology, with the basic forces of nature and the life forces of yin and yang and the five elements, which the Chinese believe that play an important role in the Chinese form of geomancy known as Feng Shui.
However the planets and the luminaries are associated; we should remember that they are just guidance to our life not the ruling party.
